Research Group Experimental Neurosurgery and Neuroanatomy

Main organisation:Department of Neurosciences
Lifecycle:1 Jan 1995 →  Today
Organisation profile:

- Head injury: pharmacological agents. - Lumbardisc herniation: prevention of epidural scan tissue formation. - Hydrodynamic characteristics of the cerebrospinal fluid spaces in normal and hydrocephalic brain. Physiopathology of the Cushing response. - ICP during external vertricular drainage. - Biomechanics of skull- and braininjuries in cyclists. Protection by helmets. - Spinal cord stumulation using a new epidural lead and pulse generator. - Efficacy and safety of pharmacological agents as neuroprotectives following severe traumatic brain injury. - Development and clinical test of a magnetic resonance-compatible stereotactic probe for laser-neurosurgery with real-time monitoring. - Study of the effects of cytokines in spinal cord injury in rats. - Study of the effects of intracerebral administration of opioids in rats.

4 main research divisions exist within this group with each of them focusing on several research lines:

1.Experimental Neuroanatomy: craniofacial implants - intrauterine neurosurgery and applied neuroanatomy

2.Functional neurosurgery: action representation in primate and human brain - deep brain stimuation for OCD - electrical interaction with brain cavity walls

3.Head injury research: prediction of secundary insult - monitoring of autoregulation - development of protective head gear

4.Oncological neurosurgery: nose-to-brain delivery of formulated siRNA-constructs - immunotherapy-based regimens for brain cancer - peroperative function preservation and tissue discrimination studies
